Learning Style

Page history last edited by Tracy Lux 13 years, 5 months ago

Objective:

To determine the learning styles of the students in my class.

Why?:

I'd like to know more about your learning style to provide flexibility in this course. I'd also like you to reflect on how you learn best/worst and how you can learn to adapt to different learning situations that are presented to you.

Process:

Go to this website:

http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html

1. Put in your name.

2. Complete the questionnaire as accurately as possible.

3. Click Submit to get your results.

4. The Learning Styles Results page will then be provided to you. It probably won't mean much at first.

5. Copy the results chart into a word document. The bulleted list here is the same they provide.

  • If your score on a scale is 1-3, you are fairly well balanced on the two dimensions of that scale.
  • If your score on a scale is 5-7, you have a moderate preference for one dimension of the scale and will learn more easily in a teaching environment which favors that dimension.
  • If your score on a scale is 9-11, you have a very strong preference for one dimension of the scale. You may have real difficulty learning in an environment which does not support that preference.

6. Then, click on "Learning Styles Descriptions". This page will help you make sense of the chart. It is a lot of text, but don't be overwhelmed.

7. Read the types of learners descriptions that you qualify for having a strong or moderate preference for. If you are balanced in each (like I am), reflect on how you agree or disagree with the learner styles applied to you. If you are strong in prefering one type, reflect on why that is.

Here is my sample response: Learning Style Response Tracy Lux.doc

These are the types of learners:

ACTIVE AND REFLECTIVE LEARNERS

SENSING AND INTUITIVE LEARNERS

VISUAL AND VERBAL LEARNERS

SEQUENTIAL AND GLOBAL LEARNERS

Overall, my scores on the scale were between 1-3 for each learning pairing. This means I am balanced in my learning style preferences; I don't depend on one too much. I believe this matches me well, as I am always very flexible when I am presented with information. I do my best regardless of how I am expected to learn since I care about actually remembering it. More specifically, I know I am active because I like to jump in and try things, but I am also reflective because I tend to think a lot about what I do before I do it. I am also both a sensing and intuitive learner. When I was in high school and college I was pretty good at remembering hard facts; I also strive at innovation, creating new ways of teaching and new lesson plans, grasping new concepts and theories for teaching. The visual and verbal pairing interests me the most. I am a visual learner in the sense that I always picture what I am reading or hearing, I can take myself back to places by picturing them, I can recall road signs and directions in my mind, and I remember pictures of my past but not the actual memory. As a language teacher, though, I am also very verbal. I enjoy having written descriptions and directions for clarity. As far as the final learning pairing on the survey goes, I am both sequential and global. I like things in order, following logical steps (look at my lesson above). However, I am also a "big picture" person, getting ideas for the theme of a novel before I even finish it. I don't agree with the line of "learning in large jumps, absorbing material almost randomly without seeing connections, and then suddenly getting it". I think I am a learner that takes as much in as possible at once, getting it as I go along.
